Hanukkah 2023

On Wednesday 13th December we celebrated the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

Hanukkah is the Jewish Festival of Lights. The word ‘Hanukkah’ means ‘Dedication’ in Hebrew.

We were fortunate to have Mrs Connolly (Head of School at Cliffe Woods Primary School) come in to lead us in worship. During the special Hanukkah worship, she told us of the story behind Hanukkah. She taught us about the small group of Jews called the Maccabees who, after winning the war against the King’s army, returned to their temple to find just one small jar of oil left. They used it to light a candle, however miraculously the jar lasted for 8 whole days. This is why Jewish people light a candle on their hanukkiah, (a nine-branched candelabrum) for every day of Hanukkah which lasts for eight days.

She also told us about the food that is eaten, the gifts given and the games that are played such as Dreidel.

During the day, we then took part in different activities linked to Hanukkah, such as art work and even creating our own dreidel game.
