Year 3 and Year 5 were fortunate enough to take part in sessions delivered by Roots to Food on Tuesday 25th April.
Year 3
The year 3 children had a fantastic time taking part in the Roots to Food workshops as they got to learn lots of new skills and try the Indonesian/Thai inspired curry they had spent time preparing and cooking. The enthusiasm of the children to learn and to try new things was incredible throughout the session. After being taught about the importance of hygiene when it comes to food and to be careful when dealing with raw chicken, Darren (the chef) demonstrated the skills they needed to complete the task. Initially the children had to mix their choice of chicken or butterbeans, into the marinade, ensuring that it was fully covered in the spices. They were then shown how to do a claw grip (a method used to hold the food whilst chopping so as to avoid cutting your fingers!) and how to cut the vegetables they were going to use (red and yellow peppers, carrots, spring and red onions). Each child had the opportunity to demonstrate their cutting skills to contribute to the final product. Through very careful listening, the children were able to follow all of the instructions that they were given, adding the ingredients at the right time and knowing why they had to go in that order. After a few minutes of cooking, the food was ready for them to try. They loved what they had cooked, and a couple almost licked the plates clean!
Year 5
We took part in a cookery class where we learnt how to cook a Thai Noodle Curry. We learnt how to marinade, peel, slice and chop using the claw grip as well as learning about the nutritional value of each ingredient. We became top chefs as our dishes tasted delicious and we were all very impressed with the flavours!
