Welcome to Year 3 Classes
Year 3 is an exciting year for the children as we support them in transitioning from Key Stage 1 to Stage 2. We cover a variety of interesting topics across the year, which encourages students to broaden their thinking. These include Let’s Go Fly a Kite, Greeks, rainforests and forces.
In year 3, we will also continue to utilise the forest school, biodome and Food tech room to support the children’s learning across the curriculum, combining academic input and practical learning.
We will continue to build on the foundations that will be progressed in year 4 whilst working on the fluency of the skills embedded in EYFS and Key Stage 1.
Our charity this year is KSS – The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. We look forward to having charity days and raising funds for a worthwhile cause.

Parents can view a ‘Curriculum Overview’ at the start of each term, informing them about what the children will be learning, along with a parent information letter and world mat. Home Learning
Children need to read at home every day, ideally with an adult. Your child will take home a book appropriate for their reading level, and we ask that they record a comment each day in their yellow reading journal and return it to school. Reading journals are checked to know how well a child engages with the book. Reading daily is key to improving and supporting phonic knowledge, fluency and comprehension skills.
In addition, logging on to and playing ten minutes of Doodle Maths, Timestables Rockstars and Spelling Shed assignments daily will also improve Maths fluency and spelling skills through fun and interactive ways.
Big Ideas
At our school, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding of six concepts: Investigation, Significance, Comparison, Change, Nature, and Humankind. Each term, we focus on one of these Big Ideas, integrating it into our curriculum to support students’ learning journeys throughout their education and beyond.
Our homework projects are designed to reinforce these Big Ideas, creating a cohesive and collaborative learning experience for our entire school community. These projects are open-ended, allowing children to take the lead and present their work in creative and unique ways. We encourage students to explore their own ideas and approaches, celebrating their individuality and innovation.
The projects culminate in opportunities for students to share their work during parents’ evenings, open afternoons, or within their classrooms. This not only showcases their learning but also strengthens our community as we come together to celebrate the diverse and thoughtful contributions of our students.
