Welcome to our EYFS classes
At St Botolph’s, we pride ourselves on providing an outstanding learning environment for our EYFS children. Our broad and balanced curriculum encourages a love for learning, providing strong foundations for their future at St Botolph’s. Our day includes a mixture of teacher-led learning (Maths, Phonics, Our Learning) and child-initiated time (COOL Time) where the children free flow and can explore the environment, develop relationships with their peers, embed previously taught skills and have fun. All children are encouraged to be independent in the setting, resources are easily accessible, and routines are embedded to ensure they know what they will be learning and how the day will evolve.
EYFS at St. Botolph’s greatly emphasises children learning by doing. Our children are given opportunities to gain first-hand experiences through play and active involvement while being encouraged to be independent. In addition to adult-led focused activities and independent, focused activities, both inside and out, children have access to activities that they can access themselves and resources that allow them to follow their ideas.
In addition, we follow the national curriculum statutory framework for EYFS.

Home Learning
Children receive the following weekly homework:
- Phonics – letter formation practice and phonics revision
- Reading – a reading book (for the child to read to/with the adult) and a ‘reading for pleasure’ book (a storybook for the adult to read to the child).
- Home Learning Journal – an opportunity to share something from their weekend.
At our school, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding of six concepts: Investigation, Significance, Comparison, Change, Nature, and Humankind. Each term, we focus on one of these Big Ideas, integrating it into our curriculum to support students’ learning journeys throughout their education and beyond.
Our homework projects are designed to reinforce these Big Ideas, creating a cohesive and collaborative learning experience for our entire school community. These projects are open-ended, allowing children to take the lead and present their work in creative and unique ways. We encourage students to explore their own ideas and approaches, celebrating their individuality and innovation.
The projects culminate in opportunities for students to share their work during parents’ evenings, open afternoons, or within their classrooms. This not only showcases their learning but also strengthens our community as we come together to celebrate the diverse and thoughtful contributions of our students.
