Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of VE Day at St Botolph’s

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, St Botolph’s took a step back in time with a creative and memorable day of learning and celebration. In a special themed event, pupils were issued evacuee labels and “relocated” to different ‘counties’, classrooms around the school, where they immersed themselves in a range of wartime-inspired activities.

The day brought together pupils from all year groups, encouraging collaboration and camaraderie across the school. It was heartwarming to see older children guiding and supporting younger ones, proudly sharing their knowledge and skills in true wartime spirit.

Throughout the day, children took part in a variety of creative tasks. From designing their own medals and crafting colourful pinwheels to decorating teapots and bunting, every activity was an opportunity to learn through hands-on fun. One of the highlights was making Spitfire pegs; an imaginative way to explore the iconic aircraft of the era.

In addition to the crafting, pupils spent time learning about the significance of VE Day and reflecting on the historical importance of the occasion. The experience culminated with everyone returning to their “home counties” (original classrooms) to proudly share their creations and what they had learned.

It was a truly special day that not only brought history to life but also showcased the power of community, creativity, and collaboration at St Botolph’s.
